The luxury yachting world is undergoing a sea change.

No longer is luxury defined solely by size, speed or extravagant interiors – today’s yacht and superyacht owners are placing increasing importance on sustainability.

Environmental impact is now a significant consideration for discerning yachting enthusiasts who demand the very best in comfort and style, without unnecessarily harming the planet.

As eco-consciousness continues to grow, the industry is evolving to meet these new expectations, with Sanlorenzo leading the charge and paving the way for a more sustainable future for those who wish to enjoy life on the water.

The rise of eco-conscious luxury yachting

Sustainability is becoming a central theme in global luxury markets, with affluent individuals now assessing the environmental credentials of their potential purchases as carefully as they do aesthetics, performance or brand legacy.

A clear shift has emerged in recent years among wealthy yacht buyers. There is a rising demand for environmentally responsible solutions, with owners seeking ways to reduce their carbon footprint while still enjoying the prestige and performance they expect.

This shift has had a profound influence on the luxury yacht market – in design, technology, and innovation. Leading builders are now integrating hybrid propulsion systems, advanced hull designs, and sustainable materials to minimise ecological impact.

These innovations reflect the values of a new generation of buyers who expect their lifestyle choices, including yacht ownership, to align with their environmental principles. For them, sustainability is not a compromise or a ‘nice-to-have’ – it is an integral part of modern luxury.

Sanlorenzo’s commitment to sustainability

Sanlorenzo truly stands at the forefront of sustainable innovation in the luxury yacht sector. Renowned for its artisan craftsmanship and bespoke design, the Italian shipyard is now equally celebrated for its dedication to reducing the environmental impact of its fleet, and for driving the wider decarbonisation of yachting.

At the heart of this ambition is Sanlorenzo’s ‘Road to 2030’ strategy, a visionary roadmap that underscores the brand’s commitment to responsible production. This includes investments in alternative energy solutions, sustainable materials, and low-emission propulsion technologies.

Yachts such as the 50Steel and 50 X-Space exemplify this ethos.

In 2024, Sanlorenzo launched the 50Steel, the world’s first superyacht equipped with a Green Methanol Reformer Fuel Cell system, capable of powering all hotel systems with zero emissions.

Developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy, this revolutionary technology converts green methanol into hydrogen and then into electricity, enabling the yacht to power onboard systems without the need to store hydrogen.

The implications are as elegant as they are transformative: the yacht can generate up to 100kW of electrical energy with its engines and diesel generators completely shut down. The result? Whisper-quiet serenity at anchor, uninterrupted by fumes or fuel consumption, a truly seamless blend of luxury and sustainability.

Then in January 2025, Sanlorenzo unveiled an innovative new project: the world’s first bi-fuel green methanol propulsion system, developed in partnership with MAN. This groundbreaking system, to be installed on the upcoming 50 X-Space, will enable a reduction in navigation emissions by up to 70%.

Innovation has always been one of Sanlorenzo’s core values, and with the 50 X-Space the brand sets a new benchmark for sustainable superyacht engineering, benefitting not just its owners but the yachting industry as a whole.

In every detail, Sanlorenzo continues to push the boundaries of what a sustainable luxury yacht can be. To own a Sanlorenzo is no longer just a statement of taste – it is a commitment to a future where indulgence meets integrity, and where true luxury is measured not only by what you experience but by what you leave untouched.

Benefits of sustainable yachting

One of the most compelling reasons to consider a more sustainable yacht today lies in the very real, tangible benefits it offers, not just to the environment, but to the owner’s overall experience and investment.

Hybrid propulsion systems and energy-efficient technologies are more than just eco-friendly credentials, they deliver practical savings and long-term value.

By reducing reliance on traditional diesel engines, hybrid systems significantly lower fuel consumption, particularly during low-speed cruising or manoeuvring in ports, harbours, and marinas.

Electric propulsion also creates less mechanical stress, resulting in reduced wear and tear on key components. This means lower maintenance costs, fewer service intervals, and a smoother, quieter onboard experience.

Beyond operational savings, sustainable yachts are proving to be smart investments. As emissions regulations tighten and environmental awareness rises, greener yachts are increasingly seen as future-proof. Not only do they meet evolving compliance standards, but they are also more appealing to a growing demographic of high-net-worth individuals who prioritise sustainability.

This shift in buyer preference is already influencing the resale market. Yachts with hybrid propulsion, energy-efficient systems, and responsibly sourced materials are commanding greater interest and retaining value over time. For many owners, investing in a greener yacht today offers peace of mind for tomorrow.

The future of luxury yachts is green

The luxury yacht industry is entering a transformative era, one where innovation and sustainability are not merely complementary but inseparable. Today’s eco-conscious buyers are driving this change, demanding that their yachts reflect both their taste and their values.

With forward-thinking brands like Sanlorenzo leading the way, the future of yachting promises a blend of style, performance, and environmental responsibility.

Sanlorenzo awarded world-first RINA certification for digital yachting

Sanlorenzo has announced the issuance of the world’s first ‘DigitalYachting’ certification by RINA. This certification, awarded to the sixth unit of the SP110 line, marks a new chapter in the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and digital transformation within the yachting industry.

In collaboration with D.gree, a brand of SailADV, and under the supervision of RINA, Sanlorenzo aims to enhance the performance, safety, and user experience of its yachts by utilising advanced digitalisation technologies. The company has developed intuitive monitoring and supervision solutions for customers, managers, technicians, captains, and crew members alike.

The H-Log monitoring system installed on board collects more than 800 parameters, including functional states, onboard data, and alarms, optimising safety, efficiency, comfort, and overall performance. Supported by the H-
System platform, the yacht’s status becomes accessible both locally and remotely across various devices, offering complete supervision.

Real-time visualisation and remote monitoring allow for rapid decision-making and scenario analysis based on real data, minimising unexpected events and maximising performance and safety.

“We are extremely proud to receive the RINA Digital Yachting certification for the H-Log system installed on our units,” stated Tommaso Vincenzi, President of the Yacht Business Unit.

“This confirms the high level of digitalisation we have achieved through continuous investment in innovation. It certifies our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible for our customers in the yachting world.”

RINA’s new Digital Yacht Class Notation aims to certify onboard systems that enable monitoring and control of both essential and non-essential systems, through data management for remote analysis. This requires rigorous design and testing to ensure maximum safety and reliability.

The certification process includes requirements such as:
• Computer-Based Systems (CBS): Simplified hardware and software requirements for yachts with a gross tonnage under 500 GT
• Data Shore Transfer (ADC): Specifications for secure data transfer between the yacht and shore
• Cyber Safety: Standards to protect onboard digital systems from cyber threats for yachts with SL > 500GT

The SP110 certification is a testament to Sanlorenzo’s forward-thinking approach and a significant step toward setting new standards for digital yachting on a global  scale.

The future of sustainability in yachting has never been closer

At Sanlorenzo’s annual press conference held during the Cannes Yachting Festival, Sanlorenzo confirmed its robust business performance, reflecting the effectiveness of its strategy, sustainability and innovation being key growth pillars.

In the first half of 2024, Sanlorenzo has achieved significant milestones on its journey toward its ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2030, proving its central role as a pioneer in the sustainability of the yachting industry.

Financial Results

During the conference, Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo, presented the financial results for the first half of 2024, with Net Revenues from the sale of new yachts of €415.1 million, a 6.9% increase compared to the first half of 2023.

Sanlorenzo also achieved an EBITDA of €74.2 million (+9.7%) and a net profit of €43.6 million (+11.6%). Net organic investments in the first half totalled €20.5 million, a 56% increase with respect to the same period in 2023, with approximately 90% dedicated to expanding industrial capacity and developing new models and product ranges.

“These excellent results for the first half of the year fill us with pride and give us new energy to continue on the path we have set,” stated Perotti. “A special thanks goes to all the teams at Sanlorenzo, whose dedication and daily commitment make it possible to stay on the planned growth trajectory. These numbers and performance confirm the absolute reliability and effectiveness of our business model and the soundness of the strategic choices outlined in our ‘Road to 2030’ plan.

“We successfully completed two avant-garde projects, delivering the 50Steel equipped with a green methanol reformer-fuel cell system for on-board hotellerie services, and the hydrogen-powered BGH tenders built for two America’s Cup challengers.”

The strong results from the first half of the year and 2024 Guidance targets being comfortably at reach, confirm not only the effectiveness of the course taken but also the ability to maintain the right pace and meet the milestones of the ambitious journey Sanlorenzo has outlined for the coming years.

Looking Toward 2030: Sustainability and Technological Innovation

Although recreational boating accounts for only 0.22% of the total greenhouse gas emissions for the entire maritime sector, Sanlorenzo has made it its mission, with the strategic ‘Road to 2030’ plan, to lead and anticipate the industry’s path toward carbon neutrality, making sustainability and technological innovation the drivers of growth for the decade leading up to 2030.

To meet the targets set in the plan for progressively reducing its environmental impact, Sanlorenzo has entered into strategic agreements with global leaders in energy and propulsion production, such as Volvo Penta, Siemens Energy, and Rolls-Royce Solution GmbH – Global Marine (MTU).

The ambitious goal for Sanlorenzo is to deliver the first carbon-neutral-powered yacht by 2030. In the meantime, two fundamental milestones were achieved in 2024 with the delivery of the first unit of the 50Steel and the two Bluegame BGH-HSV chase boats.

Leveraging the experience gained from the BGH-HSV project, Bluegame is already working on the BGM65HH (hydrogen-hybrid) multihull, set to launch in 2027, designed to enable zero-emission sailing for 80 miles.

The vessel will benefit from a partnership with Volvo Penta and will feature the IPS Professional Platform, built on the revolutionary success of Volvo Penta IPS, with improvements in efficiency, extended cruising range, higher top speed, and faster acceleration. This system is designed for efficiency, optimising fuel consumption and reducing emissions.

Sanlorenzo’s next steps towards more sustainable yachting will focus on further developing fuel cell technology and introducing hybrid propulsion systems.

The shipyard has already signed a second agreement with Siemens Energy for the further development of the Reformer Fuel Cell system technology (to be completed by 2026) with the goal of expanding fuel cell applications and further reducing size, weight, and costs.

In addition, owing to an agreement with MAN by Ranieri Tonissi and Nanni Industries, Sanlorenzo aims to create by 2027 a superyacht with a Bi-Fuel system powered by 80% green methanol, therefore allowing for an equivalent percentage of emissions reduction, well above the 55% emission reduction target by 2030 set by the EU’s Fit for 55 agenda.

New Sanlorenzo SP92 and SL86A launch in Cannes

Kicking off the September boat shows in style, Sanlorenzo has unveiled two new models in its Yacht range, marking an evolution of their respective lines: the SL86A for the Asymmetrical line and the SP92 for the Smart Performance line.

Sanlorenzo SL86A

Developed in collaboration with Studio Zuccon, the SL86A represents a new evolution in the application of the asymmetrical concept, maximising its potential to create innovative and optimised living solutions while maintaining the elegance and captivating style of Sanlorenzo design.

Applying the principles of asymmetry to a smaller boat compared to previous models resulted in a distinctive outcome in terms of enhancing both interior and exterior spaces.

Internally, the entire main deck is dedicated to guest conviviality with a large open space living area and the option for a spacious aft salon and a customisable dining area at the bow. The minimal visual barriers highlight the large asymmetrical window that extends from aft to bow, creating a constant connection with the sea.

This connection is fully experienced in the aft area as well. Owing to a minimal, yet highly innovative design, the boat navigates without a visible staircase, and the introduction of a transparent element strengthens the connection with the surrounding marine panorama.

Externally, the SL86A’s outside spaces are enlarged and made more accessible, with to two large sunbathing areas, one at the bow and one integrated into the superstructure.

Sanlorenzo SP92

With the SP92, the second model in its Smart Performance line, Sanlorenzo reaffirms its commitment to development in the high-performance, sports boats segment.

Developed in collaboration with Studio Zuccon for the exterior design and architect Piero Lissoni for the interior design, the SP92’s design is inspired by minimalism and clean lines, enhancing the yacht’s sportiness while maintaining its unparalleled style, elegance, and performance.

The interior is distributed over four levels, featuring solutions that enhance the spaciousness and livability of the spaces and strengthen the connection with the surrounding marine environment. An example of this is the large windows that connect the interior with the expansive aft area, which includes a customisable beach area of approximately 45 square metres.

In line with the core concept of the Smart Performance line, the SP92 combines the characteristics of a high-performance yacht with Sanlorenzo’s commitment to sustainability. From the unique hull geometry, which optimises the resistance coefficient at commonly used speeds, to the design of structural elements, the high-efficiency monocrystalline photovoltaic system, and the choice of furnishings made from composite materials and aeronautical technologies, everything has been designed to minimise consumption and reduce environmental impact.

Cannes – More than red carpets and Riviera glamour

Cannes is synonymous with film festivals and Riviera chic, but the city is also a haven for the discerning traveller. Beyond the red carpet lies a destination that blends Provençal charm, cultural richness, and refined elegance – all framed by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.

Each September, Cannes becomes the epicentre of global yachting during the Cannes Yachting Festival, Europe’s premier in-water yacht show. September is also one of the best times to visit: the summer crowds fade, the pace slows, and Cannes reveals its authentic soul.

This guide showcases the very best of Cannes luxury travel, from historic enclaves and Provençal markets to five-star stays and Michelin-starred dining.

Experience

The soul of Cannes: Le Suquet

Perched above the marina where yachts gather for the festival, Le Suquet is the medieval heart of Cannes. Its cobbled lanes, pastel-hued façades, and sweeping sea views reveal the city’s roots long before its cinematic fame.

  • Artisan charm: Wander ateliers restoring antiques, framing local art, or handcrafting leather goods. Independent galleries and stone-walled studios showcase Riviera and international artists.
  • Café culture: Enjoy Provençal rosé on a sun-dappled terrace, or discover chef-led hidden gems tucked into the winding streets.

Markets: A Provençal feast for the senses

Cannes’ open-air markets reflect its culinary heritage and local life.

  • Marché Gambetta: Near Rue d’Antibes, blending tradition with modern flair. Browse gourmet preserves, handmade soaps, Provençal linens, and fashion from local designers. Ideal for elegant souvenirs or gifts.

Here, slowing down becomes an art form — savouring not just flavours, but the rhythm of Riviera life.

Explore

Cannes is also the perfect base from which to discover the region’s natural beauty and cultural richness if you have time to stay for aa few more days.

The Îles de Lérins: A yacht-friendly escape

Just a tender ride from Vieux Port, the Îles de Lérins offer peace and nature away from the city’s energy.

Île Sainte-Marguerite: Famous for Fort Royal – once home to the Man in the Iron Mask. Highlights include the Musée de la Mer, eucalyptus trails, hidden coves, and the Underwater Ecomuseum, an extraordinary snorkelling and diving site with submerged sculptures by Jason deCaires Taylor.

Île Saint-Honorat: Home to a Cistercian monastic community since the 5th century. Sample award-winning organic wines, olive oil, and liqueurs during private tastings. Explore medieval chapels, palm-lined paths, and tranquil courtyards.

In the world of yachting, luxury is more than just an overused descriptor or a physical product. Luxury is the experience of the on-water lifestyle.

And a luxury yacht is not simply a yacht, it is a floating expression of individual style, craftsmanship, and incredible design – from fully personalised interiors to seamless performance.

Sanlorenzo has long stood at the forefront of this philosophy, redefining what it means to own a luxury yacht. Through an unwavering commitment to bespoke design, customised detailing, and quiet elegance, Sanlorenzo delivers more than yachts – it crafts unique experiences.

Sanlorenzo SD132

This article explores the defining elements of luxury yachts and reveals how Sanlorenzo continues to shape this rarefied world.

Key features that set luxury yachts apart

While every yacht offers travel, freedom and escape, luxury yachts set themselves apart through the calibre of their design, materials, and performance. Here’s what distinguishes these exceptional vessels:

Premium materials

Inside luxury yachts, you’ll often find carefully curated rare and high-quality materials: Carrara marble, brushed teak, carbon fibre, and hand-stitched leather. These aren’t simply for aesthetics – they speak to durability, prestige, and tactile experience.

Impeccable craftsmanship

Luxury yacht interiors are defined by handcrafted finishes and obsessive attention to detail. From hand-laid parquet flooring to sculptural staircases and bespoke furnishings, every detail onboard is considered. This artisan craftsmanship transforms yachts interiors from functional areas to personalised spaces.

Cutting-edge design

Modern luxury yachts boast avant-garde silhouettes and fluid, light-filled interiors. Leading shipyards, like Sanlorenzo, incorporate innovations that enhance both beauty and performance – where form complements function.

Sanlorenzo SD132

Superior performance

Luxury isn’t only about the yacht’s interior and exterior aesthetics. True excellence includes cutting-edge navigation technology, stabilisation systems, and top-tier propulsion for smooth, silent cruising. Performance should feel effortless, no matter what the weather or the sea state.

Bespoke layouts and owner customisation

No two owners are alike – and nor should their yachts be. Custom luxury yacht features such as spa rooms, private gyms, beach clubs, or even onboard art galleries are standard requests. True luxury, when it comes to owning a yacht, lies in customisation – from the layout to the premium materials, fixtures and fitting, and designer furniture.

How luxury shapes the design and character of Sanlorenzo yachts

Sanlorenzo doesn’t merely design yachts – it crafts spaces that reflect the lifestyle and vision of each individual client, bringing together their personal tastes and onboard requirements.

Space is a luxury

In Sanlorenzo yachts, the interior space is treated as a blank canvas. Proportions, light, flow, and openness are carefully designed and refined. Whether open-plan saloons or intimate lounges, each area is purposeful and inviting – tailored to each individual owner.

Client-centric design process

Building a Sanlorenzo is a journey the team at Sanlorenzo Yachts UK takes with its clients. From initial layout to final material selections, clients play a central role in shaping their yachts, expressing personality through design rather than just soft furnishings and ornamentation.

Signature material palettes

Refined tones, organic textures, and understated elegance. Sanlorenzo collaborates with renowned interior designers to create serene atmospheres with materials like Tabu-Thai Walnut wood, Carrera marble, and soft leathers.

Seamless connection to the sea

Large panoramic windows, fold-out terraces, and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions foster a continual visual and emotional connection with the sea. It’s about more than just the panoramic views; it’s about the experience of being in touch with the ocean.

Sanlorenzo SD132

Tactile, sensory luxury

The feel of hand-polished wood, the weight of a custom door handle, the softness of bespoke textiles – luxury yacht interiors evoke an emotional response. Owning a Sanlorenzo is a fully sensory experience, not just a visual one.

Inside the Sanlorenzo philosophy: Luxury redefined

At the heart of Sanlorenzo’s ethos is its ‘made to measure’ philosophy. Here, luxury isn’t defined by flashy ostentation or spectacle but by the precision, intention, and meaning.

Timeless over trendy

Rather than chase trends, Sanlorenzo embodies enduring elegance. Its yachts are not extravagant showpieces but offer timeless luxury where the design remains relevant for decades.

Collaboration with design visionaries

From Piero Lissoni to Patricia Urquiola, Sanlorenzo partners with the world’s leading forward thinking design luminaries. Their architectural mindset brings a unique sophistication to every yacht.

Exclusivity by design

Sanlorenzo limits its production to ensure the highest quality and exclusivity. Each yacht is a ‘one off’ made slowly, thoughtfully, and entirely for its owner.

Redefining the meaning of luxury

Luxury is a mindset: one that values individuality and authenticity. Luxury is no longer just about owning something. It’s about creating something that’s also experienced – bringing forth an enduring, emotional response.

Sanlorenzo models that embody modern luxury

Sanlorenzo’s growing fleet is a testament to how innovation and elegance can coexist.

Sanlorenzo SD90 #165 launches, ready for a summer of family cruising

From its shipyard in Ameglia, Italy, Sanlorenzo has launched a beautifully personalised SD90, an exquisite example of the 27-metre semi-displacement model from its popular SD Series.

Sweeping horizontal lines define the GRP hull and superstructure to offer a timeless aesthetic to this incredible 150 GT yacht, which boasts a beam of 7-metres and a draft of 1.87-metres, providing spacious and elegant accommodation for up to eight people.

With the build overseen by the expert team from Sanlorenzo’s UK representative, Sanlorenzo Yachts UK, this bespoke SD90 has been tailored to the unique tastes, style and requirements of the owner and his family.

“The build and design of this SD90, has been very much a family affair,” says Nick Hatfield, Sales Manager at Sanlorenzo Yachts UK and Ireland.

“The four ensuite cabins, comprising a full beam master on the main deck, two double guest cabins and one twin cabin with a pullman berth, make it an ideal family yacht to accommodate multiple generations.

“In addition, the crew area has its own mess, two crew cabins for up to four crew, both with their own bathrooms.

“This is a yacht perfectly suited to cruising in the Mediterranean where she’ll be based, allowing the owner and those onboard to escape the crowds in style and comfort while visiting the plethora of secluded coves and shallow anchorages only accessible via the sea.”

Powered by twin MAN 8V 1200HP engines, she has a range of over 1200 nautical miles at an efficient cruising speed of 11 knots.

Philippe Briand took care of the naval architecture, designing an economical and seaworthy hull. The exterior design was penned by the expert hands of Zuccon International Project, while the interior has been inspired by another great designer.

Hatfield continues: “The stunning interior of this SD90 has been inspired by the designs of Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola, with curved, fluted wood featured throughout, and the shipyard’s in-house design team worked closely with the owner’s wife and daughter-in-law to craft the desired finish.

“With her own design studio, the owner’s daughter-in-law also styled the interior, curating the soft décor and tasteful furniture which shape the yacht’s voluminous living areas, personalising it to fully fulfil the family’s needs while afloat.

“This is the beauty of owning a Sanlorenzo, it can be completely tailor-made to an individual’s needs, supporting their lifestyle choices – working with them directly, a designer of their choice or utilising the expertise and artisan craftsmanship of the shipyard’s design team. The options are almost limitless.”

A project which highlights the shipyard’s versatility and expertise when bringing an owner’s dream yacht to life, this unique SD90 will be delivered to the family at the end of July in time to enjoy the end of the Mediterranean season.

At this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival (10-15 September 2024), the Sanlorenzo Yachts UK team will be presenting another exquisite example of an SD90, along side an incredible line-up of Sanlorenzo and Bluegame yachts – which includes two world debuts and multiple award-winning models.
