The History of Sanlorenzo Yachts

Sanlorenzo was founded in 1958 in Limite Sull’Arno, near Florence, Italy, by Gianfranco Cecchi and Giuliano Pecchia, before moving to Viareggio, Tuscany in 1972 when it was taken over by Giovanni Jannetti.

The founders envisioned creating high-quality, tailor-made yachts that reflected the elegance and sophistication of Italian design and craftsmanship.

Sanlorenzo has experienced steady growth over the years, establishing itself as one of the leading luxury yacht builders in the world. In the 1980s, the company expanded its production facilities and product range with the launch of the SL57 – the shipyard’s first-ever fibre-glass vessel.

During the 1990s, Sanlorenzo changed the superyacht landscape with the introduction of its SL100, while also becoming known for its innovative designs and customisation options, completely catering to the individual tastes and preferences of yacht owners.

To further expand its capabilities, in 1999 Sanlorenzo moved its operations to Ameglia inside a nature reserve in the province of La Spezia, in Liguria. That same year, the shipyard was certified UNI ENO ISO14001 to guarantee that its production processes respected the environment.

In 2005, the majority shareholding on the company was acquired by Massimo Perotti, who changed the name from Cantieri Navali Sanlorenzo Spa to Sanlorenzo Spa. Two years later, Sanlorenzo returned to Viareggio to establish a second shipyard for the creation of new product lines to complement the shipyards existing fleet, two of which (SD92 and 40 Alloy) were awarded the Show Boats Design Award and two World Superyacht Awards. In 2016, building on the success of the larger yachts in its range, the company opened the Sanlorenzo Superyacht shipyard in La Spezia, before being listed on the Milan Stock Exchange in 2018.

Salorenzo is now the leading single branded shipyard in yachts over 24-metres in the eminent Global Order Book ranking, maintaining a very strong presence in the luxury yacht market. The company has made an indelible mark on the world of yachting by consistently pushing the boundaries of design, technology, and customisation, and its commitment to craftsmanship and innovation has garnered acclaim, with the company receiving multiple awards and accolades for its yachts.

Always at the forefront of cutting-edge technology and design, Sanlorenzo has embraced advancements in materials, construction techniques, and onboard systems to enhance performance, comfort, and sustainability of its range of iconic luxury yachts and superyachts, including the SL, SD, and SX series detailed below:

SL Series

Known for its contemporary design, the SL series offers a range of streamlined, elegant and well-balanced planing yachts. The range includes six models with lengths from 24 to 38 metres.

SD Series

The semi-displacement models of Sanlorenzo’s SD fleet draw design inspiration from the trans-Atlantic liners of the 1930s, combining luxury with functionality and offering spacious interiors and versatile layouts.

From 28 to 38 metres in length and build in a composite material, the series provides and outstanding range to reach even the most faraway destinations.

SX Series

Introduced more recently the SX series is a crossover between a flybridge yacht and explorer vessel, featuring innovative designs like the SX76 and SX88, with superstructures that reach forwards, and the beach areas with the proportions of a large terrace.

SP Line

Sanlorenzo’s new Sport Yacht Series, the SP Line brings forth a new generation of yachts which break the mould, offering top performance while ensuring the highest efficiency and maximum comfort at all speeds.

The first model of the series, the SP110 is a project brought to fruition through the collaboration of experts with the highest level of individual skill: Bernardo Zuccon for the exterior, Tilli Antonelli of San Lorenzo Product Development, Marco Arnaboldi for the hull design and Piero Lissoni for the interior.

Over the years, Sanlorenzo has collaborated with renowned designers such as Chris Bangle (a renowned automotive designer), Spanish industrial designer Patricia Urquiola, and Italian interior designer Piero Lissoni, as well as architects like Luca Santella.  Sanlorenzo also has a long-standing relationship with Zuccon International Project, a prestigious Italian architectural and design studio. This successful partnership has resulted in the creation of a new models showcasing a blend of elegance and functionality.

Through these unique collaborations, Sanlorenzo has set itself apart in the luxury yacht market with revolutionary designs. Favoured by many celebrities and high-profile individuals, notable past owners include Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher and fashion designer John Galliano, which further contributes to the brand’s allure for ownership and charter.

Sanlorenzo continues to focus on innovation and has demonstrated a commitment to sustainability in its future projects. The company will continue to introduce new models with advanced technologies, improved efficiency, and eco-friendly features.

As an example, Sanlorenzo was recently awarded with approval certification by Lloyd’s Register for its Fuel Cell system and Type C containment tank, designed by the shipyard together with Siemens Energy.

The Lloyd’s Register certification validates the compliance of the methanol fuel cell system with internationally recognised environmental standards, consolidating its credibility on the market as well as confirming it meets the required safety standards.

This innovative solution will debut on Sanlorenzo’s new 50Steel, with the vessel from the line due for delivery in the summer of 2024. The methanol fuel cell system will allow the vessel to generate electricity for on-board hotel services, with the engines and generators switched off, significantly extending the time spent at anchor and manoeuvring without consuming diesel fuel.

The brand’s legacy is characterised by its dedication to a relentless pursuit of excellence, ensuring that Sanlorenzo remains a prominent name in the luxury yacht industry. The company’s ability to adapt to changing market trends while maintaining its core values contributes to its enduring success.

Sanlorenzo: Four prestigious awards crown the success of the group

Massimo Perotti receives the ‘Premio Leonardo Qualità Italia 2023’ Award, the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the International Boat Builders in Amsterdam. The shipyard is also celebrated at Ambrosetti’s WPP Forum and at the Italy Informa Awards for the boating industry.

Sanlorenzo, world leader in luxury yachting, has achieved four prestigious accolades, crowning the company’s success.

In Rome, on November 17 at the Sala della Regina in Palazzo Montecitorio, the Premio Leonardo Qualità Italia 2023 Awards took place, promoted by the Leonardo Quality Committee, which recognize quality, innovation and export vocation of companies representing Made in Italy excellence in different industrial sectors. Sanlorenzo, in the person of his Executive Chairman Massimo Perotti, has been awarded as a leading global company in the field of luxury boating. The ceremony was attended by the President of the Committee Leonardo Luisa Todini, the President of the ICE Agency Matteo Zoppas, the Vice President of Confindustria Barbara Beltrame Giacomello, Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani.

On the evening of Thursday, November 16, while the yachting industry gathered at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam to celebrate the best in boating at the 9th Boat Builder Awards for Business Achievement, Massimo Perotti has been awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The event, organized by IBI – International Boat Industry, the world’s leading information and market intelligence platform in the nautical field. In the motivations, after mentioning that the Executive Chairman of Sanlorenzo is the youngest entrepreneur to have received this award, the jury emphasized that Massimo Perotti has made an important contribution not only to the companies he led, but also to the whole nautical industry. Today he continues to lead the development of Sanlorenzo’s innovative products, and the judges were unanimous in their decision to name him the winner of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award, joining the roll call of the major players in the industry in the Boat Builder Awards. The jury also wanted to mention that “under his management, Sanlorenzo has increased turnover from 42 million euros in 2004 to more than 740 million in 2022, placing it today among the world’s leading builders of motor yachts and superyachts.”

On the day of November 17, two other important recognitions. In Milan, General Manager Ferruccio Rossi represented the luxury Maison at the WPP Ambrosetti Forum where Sanlorenzo was celebrated among the 10 companies operating in Italy that have distinguished themselves for their economic results, capacity for innovation, attentive and participatory communication with stakeholders, attention to the territories in which they operate, and investments and projects with a high social impact. In the evening in Rome at a ceremony at the Luiss Campus, Massimo Perotti will receive the Italia Informa Award, a coveted recognition of Italian excellence, and of entrepreneurial personalities who share the ambition to emerge in a very complex economic and international scenario. Opening the awards ceremony, now in its sixth edition, will be Luiss General Director Giovanni Lo Storto.

Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman of Sanlorenzo, said:

I feel deeply honored by these prestigious awards, that, in addition to a singular contemporaneity, come after the presentation, a few days ago, of the economic results for the first nine months of 2023, with numbers that fully confirmed the strength of the Sanlorenzo brand and its business model proper of the very high-end luxury Maisons. However, these awards, each with their own characteristics, go beyond the mere economic dimension. The Leonardo Committee Award, with 30 years of history, is one of the most important and well-known awards of Made in Italy business excellence. IBI’s award is given in an arena that represents the best of world boating. Ambrosetti’s selection in a cluster of successful companies celebrates Made in Italy in such a prestigious occasion as the WPP Forum, and Italia Informa’s award is characterized by the idea of rewarding the “best,” talent, courage, and the ability to be “visionary.” I believe that all the different motivations for the awards brought together truly represent a crowning achievement for the success of our company and our business model, which is today more than ever focused on integrating ESG criteria into strategic decisions and manifesting a tangible dedication to social and environmental responsibility. Success, I want to emphasize, to which the entire great team of Sanlorenzo employees and collaborators contributed, to whom my sincerest gratitude goes.

Sanlorenzo Achieves €626 Million in Revenue for Q3 2023

Fuelled by the Success of New Models

According to its recent financial report, Sanlorenzo has experienced a notable surge in new yacht sales. Comparing the current period with the same timeframe last year, sales have increased by 15% to reach €626 million.

The Yacht Division stands out as the highest revenue generator, contributing a total of €387.5 million in the initial nine months of the year, with substantial growth in the SP line and robust demand for Sanlorenzo’s asymmetric SL models. The Superyacht Division is also flourishing, with a revenue of €171.6 million, marking a 24% increase compared to the corresponding period in 2022. The results highlight the European region as the Group’s top-performing market segment, contributing just under 70% of the total revenue for the period.

Sanlorenzo’s Bluegame brand also experienced a remarkable 28.3% growth throughout 2023, fuelled by the initial success of the BGM75 luxury catamaran launched earlier this year at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

Sanlorenzo Yacht BGM75 Interior view

As of September 2023, Sanlorenzo’s order book boasts a total value of €1.7 billion, driven by an order intake of €604.5 million over the preceding nine months. As a result, the brand has 35 projects in progress, including four new SX100 yachts, with the first delivery anticipated for 2024. Furthermore, the Italian shipyard allocated approximately €22 million to enhance production capacity and develop new models during the first three quarters of 2023.

Sanlorenzo SL120A

CEO Massimo Perotti expressed satisfaction with the board of directors’ approval of the excellent results, emphasising the robustness of the Sanlorenzo brand and its distinctive high-end luxury business model. Perotti stated that this approach enables sustainable growth even in these challenging macroeconomic and geopolitical times.

Sanlorenzo Receives Certification from Lloyd’s Register for Fuel Cell System

During the recent Monaco Yacht Show, Lloyd’s Register granted Sanlorenzo an approval certification for their Fuel Cell system and Type C containment tank, which were co-designed by the shipyard in partnership with Siemens Energy. Notably, Lloyd’s Register played a crucial role in endorsing Sanlorenzo’s project, and the certification unequivocally confirms that the methanol fuel cell system complies with globally recognised environmental standards, enhancing its credibility in the market.

“The collaboration with Sanlorenzo on this innovative project affirms LR’s role as a trusted advisor to our clients and demonstrates our support for early developers of solutions to reduce carbon emissions in the yachting industry. We are delighted to give Sanlorenzo this approval, which confirms that their methanol fuel cell system meets the required safety standards.”

Paolo Izzo, LR Sales & Marketing Manager for Italy, Monaco and Malta

This innovative solution, a pioneering first, is set to debut on the new 50Steel line of Sanlorenzo superyachts, with the first unit scheduled for delivery in the summer of 2024. The methanol fuel cell system represents a revolutionary advancement, allowing the vessel to generate electricity for on-board hospitality services while keeping the engines and generators idle. This significantly extends the time a yacht can remain anchored and manoeuvre without using fuel.

“Sanlorenzo is a trailblazer on the path to carbon neutrality in the yachting world: through the relentless work of our R&D department, we continue to take revolutionary steps in introducing technological systems aimed at reducing the environmental impact of yachts. We are proud to receive this approval from Lloyd’s Register, as we work together to pioneer decarbonisation pathways for the yachting industry.”

Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo

This marks a significant milestone for Sanlorenzo and further distinguishes the brand from other superyacht shipyards on the market. With responsible development at its core, Sanlorenzo remains dedicated to exploring and crafting technological and technical solutions aimed at minimising impact on the marine ecosystem.

If you would like to know more about this revolutionary technology, please contact the Sanlorenzo UK team: Tel. +44 2380 450 001 | [email protected]

New Build Sanlorenzo SL96A

In the summer of 2022, we began working on a client’s new build Sanlorenzo SL96A. Sanlorenzo’s approach is entirely bespoke, with the only limitation being the hull shape and exterior profile. So, the vessel is entirely customised to the owner’s wishes, tastes and lifestyle.

Even by the time of signing of the contract, the owner had itemised 411 custom modifications outside the standard factory options list and, to date, this number has now broken the 500 barrier. Unlike any competitor brand, the shipyard have taken this totally in their stride.

Sanlorenzo UK has been liaising closely with Sanlorenzo’s Interior Design Department to support our client at every step of the selection process, helping them choose all furnishing details, inclusive of furniture and supplies.

The build is happening at Sanlorenzo’s shipyard in Ameglia, just south of La Spezia, Italy, with a launch scheduled for April 2024.
Here we take a look at some of the key modifications and how the build is progressing.

Sanlorenzo Design Philosophy

For over 60 years, Sanlorenzo has crafted tailor-made motor yachts respecting the style and needs of their owners. Each yacht is the product of a 5-stage customisation process, listening to the customer’s needs.

Sanlorenzo hires leading international designers to understand and illustrate how the customer’s style may look inside the boat, developing individual interior design concepts. We then work together with our clients to create optimal, tailor-made solutions.

Owning a Sanlorenzo also means having the opportunity to choose the materials involved in the build. This choice is not limited to the cladding and coverings but extends to luxury items such as marble and wood flooring. Boat owners can choose each and every detail to best express their personality.

Custom Furnishings

When it comes to furnishings, Sanlorenzo provides customers with a blank canvas. Instead of being tied to the builder’s specifications, clients have the freedom to choose unique freestanding pieces of furniture from renowned Italian brands like Minotti, Natuzzi, Frag, B+B, and more. Modifications can also be made to suit personal tastes and complement the interior style. In this instance, our client has chosen luxurious Minotti “Connery” sofas, a chaise longue, and handcrafted tables by Sanlorenzo. The dining table is also multi-functional and electrically adjustable; it functions as a coffee table by the window when lowered and slid to starboard.

Galley Modifications

Our client is kept fully informed of the interior design plans throughout the build process, with drawings and updates sent regularly for feedback and/or approval. The galley is an area we have been developing together to ensure the space works seamlessly with their life onboard. For example, the layout features a custom butterfly-wing serving hatch on the starboard side to allow food, drinks and empty plates to be passed between the galley and front-of-house crew quickly and efficiently. Additionally, finishing touches, including a highly durable Dekton worktop, reflect the client’s personal preferences but also practical mindset. Furthermore, the galley is fully equipped with two ovens, a warming drawer, two dishwashers, ample fridge and freezer space, and an abundance of worktop space.

Crew Quarters Personalisation

Although the design and configuration of the main living areas take priority, our client has also considered the needs of his long-serving staff. The client has chosen to enhance the crew area with the same door hardware as the rest of the boat as well as fully carpeting the area to dilute the divide between guest and crew areas. The Chief Stewardess/Chef will enjoy the benefits of an enhanced cabin and shower room, and the convenience of multiple laundry appliances. These include two Miele Pro washing machines, two Miele Pro dryers, and one combi washer/dryer. Additionally, the deck and interior crew have access to Spot Zero Water, enhancing the cleaning process inside and outside the boat.

Electric Steering Options

While electric steering remains a relatively recent innovation, our client acknowledges the numerous advantages that come with this groundbreaking technology and has chosen to incorporate it into their SL96A. By eliminating hydraulic pumps and hoses, the installation process becomes notably simpler, and the entire system occupies less space. Moreover, the WorldYachts system boasts exceptional reliability, ensuring that the power steering remains unaffected even if one engine ceases to function.

Anchor Enhancements

The vessel is equipped with two 125kg anchors fitted into designated compartments, and each side is equipped with a polished stainless-steel chain. Chain washing pumps are fitted as standard and chain counters have been added, along with each anchor pocket being fitted with a camera and light for easy deployment and retrieval of the ground tackle. The windlasses are 400v AC 3-phase, 4kw with brakes and as a custom addition, our client has also opted for two additional capstans on the foredeck area to facilitate quicker groundline handling and provide a backup retrieval method should the main windlasses fail.

SL 96A

Sanlorenzo Shipyard

The Sanlorenzo shipyard in La Spezia, Italy, has been building high-quality motor yachts since 1958. It is a boutique firm in the yachting industry, producing only a limited number of made-to-measure units per year. Each yacht is designed and produced according to the specific requests, style, and desires of the individual owner. Building a Sanlorenzo takes time and passion, so the shipyard can only accommodate 50 customers a year. Over the years, the shipyard has launched over 1000 yachts, each one different from the other.

Cabin Layout Modifications

Our client has chosen a five guest-cabin, three crew-cabin layout, but with the ability to use one of the crew cabins as a guest cabin for kids. This means the boat can function like a six guest-cabin boat if required. All eight cabins have ensuite shower rooms, and there’s a day head too. The shower rooms in the VIP cabins have been customized with sliding doors to the sleeping area, to create a feeling of space when left open, and internal glass doors to the WC and shower. And a private inner hallway leading to the Owner’s cabin has been added. The flybridge features a custom dining table with a wrap-around sofa, and there are many furniture modifications in the main saloon including custom cabinets handmade by Sanlorenzo.

Electronics Modifications

Sanlorenzo offers standard silver, gold, and diamond packages for navigation electronics, but our client requested a far superior spec. With Garmin the provider of choice, a total of 11 large and 7 small Garmin touchscreens will be fitted throughout the yacht. Everything will be digitally controlled via an EmpirBus system, and two radars will provide excellent assistance with navigation. A high spec Flir camera delivers superb thermal imaging and night vision. And the steering will be controlled by a state-of-the-art electric fly by wire system

Pilothouse Modifications

Our client wanted to extend the screen area in the pilothouse and eliminate any metalwork from the arrangement. So, we’ve configured an impressive display of five 22-inch Garmin 8422 screens positioned in a seamless curved design. This is something that has not been done before onboard a Sanlorenzo yacht.

Moulding

In February 2023, the hull moulding process began in the factory in Italy. Stringers and frames will be put in place, and the hull will be given time to cure before it comes out of the mould at end of April 2023.

Sanlorenzo begins construction of the first 72Steel

The new flagship of the superyacht fleet will be the largest ever built by the yard.

In a very private ceremony with the owner in attendance, the keel of the first Sanlorenzo 72Steel was laid. This marks the official start of the construction of this remarkable flagship superyacht.

The 72Steel is an innovative project, yet it maintains Sanlorenzo’s unmistakable style and DNA: an imposing 72-metre-long metal yacht, five decks and a volume of 1850 GT. Due to be launched in 2025, a second unit of the same line has also been sold.

Zuccon International Project and Francesco Paszkowski Design will address the exterior lines and interior design. The 360 degrees design centres around onboard liveability, in which the owner’s cabin will have a dedicated deck. Interiors and exteriors will work together in a smart and functional manner, and feature extensive glazing.

This new protagonist of the Sanlorenzo range will be one of the first yachts of the future, being equipped with a hybrid diesel-electric motor system, the result of the shipyard’s ongoing research into real solutions to reduce the environmental impact of its vessels. This system embodies the best green technology on the market to significantly reduce emissions in the atmosphere and at sea. A high level of onboard comfort is achieved by streamlining spaces dedicated to the engine area, in favour of internal volumes for owners and guests.

At present, there are 22 steel and/or aluminium Sanlorenzo superyachts from 44 to 73 metres under construction. The Superyacht Division continues to record steady growth and reaffirms its leadership in the metal sector with a fleet of 45 vessels in progress.

For more information on the Sanlorenzo 72Steel, please contact us.
