Bluegame: Continual development and collaboration key to success

Innovative design, continuous development and a strategy firmly grounded in sustainability has seen Bluegame Yachts experience exponential growth over the last five years. Into this mix, throw a couple of auspicious collaborations and you’ve a game-changing recipe for success.

Founded in 2004 by ex-Olympic sailor and architect, Luca Santella, Bluegame has successfully positioned itself as a pioneer in the yachting industry, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and the creation of functional and efficient yachts that defy traditional categorisation.

In 2018, Bluegame joined the Sanlorenzo Group, which significantly enhanced its development opportunities and saw revenues multiply 16 times over five years. This impressive expansion is reflected in a strong order book as we move into 2025 and an increasing demand for the innovative Bluegame yachts in the UK market.

“Bluegame is a relatively new yacht brand in comparison to some of the British brands, but it has already made its mark on the UK market,” says Nick Hatfield, Managing Director at Sanlorenzo Yachts UK which represents the Bluegame brand in the UK and Ireland.

“The brand is offering a different approach to yachting and it’s really shaking things up in terms of design. It’s disruptive, challenging traditional layouts to provide multi-use onboard spaces with more direct access, both physically and visually, to the sea.

“These design features, coupled with robust engineering and a very high level of standard specification, are proving extremely popular with UK customers – and the exponential growth the brand has seen globally looks set to continue in the UK.”

Supporting Luca Santella’s original goal of creating practical, seaworthy yachts that provide an authentic connection to the sea, Bluegame currently offers three distinct yacht ranges that combine sophisticated design, versatility and luxury – bridging the gap between the traditional categories of flybridge and sports cruisers, trawler yachts, and open boats.

Exemplifying this is the highly publicised Bluegame BGM75 which launched at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2023. The first multihull from the Italian shipyard, the BGM75 is designed to maintain the aesthetic of a monohull with the benefits of a catamaran, and offers increased stability, large volumes and reduced fuel consumption – with the yacht claiming to consume 30 per cent less fuel than a 90-foot monohull of a similar volume.

But it’s the BGX range that’s proving to be most popular in the UK, and specifically the BGX63.

Hatfield explains: “The BGX range embodies Luca Santella’s vision of building a yacht that challenges the perceived norms of motor yacht design by blending an adventurous explorer yacht feel with uncompromising quality, luxury and functionality.

“The BGX63, in particular, has been exceptionally well received. Of all the Bluegame yachts ordered to date by UK clients, the BGX63 accounts for 40 per cent of these. With a vast beach club, an open plan upper cockpit and a clever, owner-centric layout that places the master cabin at the centre of the yacht – wherever you are onboard, you’re only a few steps from the water.

View thought the open doors onto the light wooden deck of a motor yacht looking towards the horizon across calm water

“This innovative design, coupled with Bluegame’s capacity to offer personalised interiors, is the point of difference that UK owners have been waiting for, whether they use it as a day boat while holidaying aboard or as a chase boat for a larger superyacht.”

Bluegame’s continued commitment to innovation is evidenced by its development of the BGH hydrogen-powered chase boat. Partnering with NatPower-H and leveraging its expertise in hydrogen-powered propulsion systems, Bluegame’s BGH was designed to comply with the stringent demands of the America’s Cup protocol.

White foiling twin hulled motor yacht flying across the water

And achieving speeds of up to 50 knots with zero emissions during the event, the BGH not only showcases Bluegame’s dedication to more eco-friendly yachting but also its ability to combine cutting-edge design with robust performance under demanding conditions.

Inspired by, and building on, the technology developed for the America’s Cup, Bluegame continues to innovate with the next generation of foiling cruisers. Later this year will see the launch of the BGF45, the first in Bluegame’s new BGF range of foil assisted high-speed catamarans. This new model uses its single fixed foil to improve performance by rising above the chop to reduce drag – this also affords those onboard a more comfortable ride as they ‘skim’ above the waves.

Supporting parent company Sanlorenzo’s drive towards carbon neutrality in yachting, other significant partnerships include Siemens Energy as Bluegame champions the development of sustainable energy solutions for yachts – including the use of hydrogen, and methanol, fuel cell systems to generate electricity onboard.

These notable collaborations reflect Bluegame’s strategic approach to combining design excellence, environmental responsibility, and industry leadership. And with brand recognition enhanced through its association with high-profile events and industry firsts, this strategy looks set to meet the demands of the evermore eco-conscious consumer and further accelerate the brand’s growth, both in the UK and worldwide.

Sanlorenzo and MAN Engines partner to develop the first yacht with a bi-fuel engine

At the Blue Innovation Dock during the boot Düsseldorf boat show (18-26 January 2025), Sanlorenzo presented its innovative new project for the creation of the first bi-fuel green methanol propulsion system. Developed in partnership with MAN, this groundbreaking system will be installed on the Italian shipyard’s new 50 X-Space and will enable a reduction in navigation emissions by up to 70%.

The project is part of Sanlorenzo’s ‘Road to 2030’ strategy, reaffirming the company’s pioneering role in technological innovation aimed at reducing environmental impact and positioning sustainability as a strategic lever for business growth.

This ambitious path anticipates and exceeds global and European regulatory standards, with the goal of developing the first carbon-neutral yacht by the end of the decade, supported by strategic partnerships with international players.

“We are proud to present today, alongside a major global player like MAN, an ambitious project that we are confident will contribute to revolutionising the entire yachting sector,” stated Cav. Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman and CEO of the Sanlorenzo Group.

“Today, the choice in favour of sustainable mobility and yachting is not optional. Now more than ever, the industry and infrastructure services have the critical role of promoting the most sustainable development of the sector possible, leveraging the collaboration of all stakeholders involved.

“Innovation has always been one of Sanlorenzo’s core values, and once again, we confirm our role as pioneers in introducing cutting-edge technological solutions. In this sense, the 50 X-Space project will set a new benchmark for sustainability in yachting, benefiting not only the sector but beyond.”

Mikael Lindner, Head of MAN Engines, commented: “At MAN Engines, we are committed to simplifying our customers’ business through leading sustainable solutions. The use of alternative fuels, hybrid and battery technologies is a central part of our green transformation. We are pleased to be able to contribute further to the reduction of CO2 emissions in this project with the methanol bi-fuel drive in cooperation with Sanlorenzo and our other partners.”

The bi-fuel propulsion system to be installed on the 50 X-Space is part of the LIFE MYSTIC project, promoted and co-financed by the European Union. The shipyard has joined this initiative in collaboration with Ranieri Tonissi, one of MAN’s development partners for the engines, and Nanni Industries for the generators.

Coordinated by Sanlorenzo, the project was launched in June 2024, will last 54 months, and involves a total investment of over 4.8million euros, with 60% of the funding covered by EU grants under the ‘Circular Economy and Quality of Life’ funding line of the LIFE program.

LIFE MYSTIC aims to install two high-speed, four-stroke MAN diesel engines and two four-stroke diesel generators from Nanni Industries aboard a yacht—adapted to operate on a green methanol/diesel bi-fuel combination. The goal is to test the engines and generators for yachts powered by a mix of diesel and methanol, with significant expected results:

– Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions: 150 t/y CO2eq

– Reduction in fossil fuel primary energy consumption: 700 MWh/y

– Reduction in air quality contamination: 630 kg/y

Sanlorenzo will be responsible for adapting the yacht’s design by reconfiguring the diesel fuel tanks to accommodate methanol and integrating the new distribution system, completing the bi-fuel conversion of the entire vessel. Due to its complexity, LIFE MYSTIC represents a significant step forward in the sustainability journey of the yachting sector and will bring benefits to the entire maritime industry, promoting technological development and strengthening the alternative fuel distribution chain.

In 2024, Sanlorenzo made significant strides toward sustainability with the launch of two groundbreaking models: the 50Steel, the world’s first yacht equipped with a green methanol Fuel Cell system capable of converting methanol into hydrogen and then into electricity to power onboard hotellerie systems through a fully carbon-neutral process; and the BGH-HSV (Hydrogen Support Vessel) by Bluegame, the first chase boat powered exclusively by hydrogen, achieving zero emissions. This vessel can reach speeds of 50 knots with a range of 180 miles and was designed to support two challenger teams in the most recent edition of the America’s Cup.

Although recreational boating represents only 0.22% of greenhouse gas emissions within the entire maritime sector, Sanlorenzo has made sustainability a strategic priority, surpassing the targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Union. With the launch of the 50 X-Space, scheduled for 2027, which will enable a 70% reduction in navigation emissions, Sanlorenzo will significantly exceed not only the IMO’s 70% reduction target for 2040 but also the more ambitious 55% target set by the EU’s Fit for 55 agenda for 2030.

New build Sanlorenzo SL96A: Handover and maiden voyage

Over the last two years we’ve had the pleasure of following the personal build journey of the proud owner of the new Sanlorenzo SL96A, MATCH. From choice of model to over 600 custom modifications outside the standard factory options list, he’s candidly shared his thoughts and rationale behind each decision.

Now that this incredible yacht has been launched, we spoke to the owner about his experience of working with Sanlorenzo UK the handover from the shipyard and the all-important maiden voyage.

Why did you pick up the phone to Sanlorenzo UK?

Reason for first call (a cold call) was that I was ready to buy a new boat of around 96 feet and I already knew the Sanlorenzo brand.  It’s an ultra-brand – anyone who knows boats knows Sanlorenzo is among the very best.   The reason for all my subsequent calls was the warm welcome in that first call – I knew I could work with Sanlorenzo UK to build a great boat.

What hulled motor yacht making way in front of shoreline with ancient building

How many times did you visit the shipyard?

As well as visiting Sanlorenzo at boat shows several times before and after placing the order, I flew to the Ameglia shipyard nine times.  This was very much my choice – I could have visited more or less often and if I had more time I would certainly have visited more.  In between my visits, the Sanlorenzo UK team also visited and collected photographs to allow me to see progress.

What was the handover like?

The countdown to the handover of the boat began with a special launch ceremony organised by Sanlorenzo at its yard in Ameglia, Italy in January 2024, a few months before the final handover date.

The sun shone and the whole build team gathered wearing Sanlorenzo branded overalls. They graciously thanked me over a buffet lunch for the challenge that my very detailed specification and many drawings had given them! At the crucial moment, diamond-encrusted scissors were proffered, the ribbon was cut and a bottle smashed on the starboard anchor – Franciacorta rather than Champagne – for this was Italy. Andrea Bocelli sang Time to Say Goodbye from the PA speakers and the boat was lowered into the sea for the first time.

And your first impressions?

Boarding her in the water that day, my first impressions included delight at how the custom interior had turned out. The boat has plenty of dark wood surfaces, some textured, offset by light reflective ceilings and marbles and light fabrics. The saloon windows, pretty much floor to ceiling, were breathtaking at first sight and the complex lighting scheme with touchscreen controls was even simpler to use than I had hoped.

The five guest cabins seemed bigger and better than expected. The ‘classic contemporary’ style with surfaces covered in slatted veneer, paint and leather, looked great.

The bathrooms are particularly stunning, and there’s some wonderful art. Can you tell us more?

The bathrooms were a delight. I had gone to a lot of trouble selecting the marbles,

including driving around trade suppliers in the Massa area in Tuscany where marble blocks from the Carrara mountains are processed into beautiful slabs but the launch day was the first opportunity to see the end result. The marble had been carefully cut and installed, book-matched, into five bathrooms, finished off with bronze taps and towel rails.

For artwork, Sanlorenzo prepared specific places to mount it, including setting up lighting, mirrors and reinforced wall panels.

Why did you opt for a five guest and three crew cabin layout?

The SL96A can have four or five guest cabins.  I chose five because the boat is easily big enough to host 10 guests sleeping on board, and the guest cabins in the five cabin version are approximately the same size which avoids the awkwardness of having to rank your friends and decide who gets the huge VIP suite in the four guest cabin version.

Large full beam cabin on a motor yacht with a double bed and vanity table

There can be two or three crew cabins in the SL96A, each with ensuite shower room. I chose the latter and this has worked well, and my excellent crew love their part of the boat. The boat needs four crew so you could make do with two crew cabins, but the 3 crew cabin layout allows two crew members each to have a cabin and bathroom to themselves, which is unusual on a boat of this size and they love it. All the crew cabins have portholes, local Bluetooth music, wi-fi and the same fittings, bed linens and towels as the guest cabins.

Where was your first port of call once the yacht was launched, and how was the trip?

Upon launch, the boat went straight to her home berth in Antibes.  Since then, she has hosted over 90 sleeping guests on many weekends and longer trips.  Soon after delivery she made the long-distance trip to San Pietro Island at the south-west tip of Sardinia and cruised up the east coast of Sardinia and the west coast of Corsica. This initial trip allowed me to review the basic design and layout of the boat, and the customisation choices.

Bow of a white hulled motor yacht with seating, cushions and a small wooden table

On the fundamentals, the boat is outstanding. The larger 2,400hp MTU engines that were fitted as a special order make her a serious mile-cruncher and at a fast cruising speed of 23-24 knots she is astonishingly quiet and comfortable, with the incredibly smooth V16 engines consuming about 31 litres/nm.

She will hit a top speed of 30 knots but of course that makes no sense as continuous speed.  For delivery trips and slow cruising, she sits very happily at 11-12 knots, in almost total silence, and offering good fuel economy of around 10 litres/nm.

She has Sleipner Vector fin stabilisers (an upgrade over the standard fin stabilisers) and these make her feel rock solid underway and at anchor.

The interior has delighted us and our guests every day we have been on board. The spaces seem to be laid out perfectly, with the asymmetric design providing extra floor space to allow an impressively big saloon and a very generous galley.

Although it is a personal thing, we love the dark Alpi sustainable veneer, the bronze finishings, the custom-designed furniture pieces, the slatted panelling and the total absence of those clicky doorknobs used on most boats – in fact this boat has no cupboard doorknobs anywhere.

Is it everything that you thought it would be?

Sanlorenzo Italy and Sanlorenzo UK have absolutely delivered what I hoped for, and together with friends and family I am loving the boat.

Any regrets?

Virtually none at all.  The only thing I can think of is that I regret not specifying a much bigger water maker.  With ten guests and four crew, plus the consequent increased dishwasher and laundry use, the single 280 lph machine can only just keep up and I have no redundancy at all. This is easily cured: a second water maker is being fitted in the 2024/5 winter period.

Do you think you’ll keep the SL96A – or do you think you’ll embark on another build project soon?

It’s early days and this question is hard for a serial boat owner.  I love this Sanlorenzo SL96A and might keep it several years.  On the other hand, it is tempting to build another and I’d love an SL120A, though of course that couldn’t be an owner driver boat because it exceeds the 24m LLL rule.  For now, I am incredibly pleased with the SL96A and have zero regrets about choosing this boat over the other strong contenders.

Sanlorenzo launches the new SD132

Sanlorenzo has launched the new flagship of its Yacht Business Unit – the SD132.

Measuring 40.7-metres in length, the SD132 is the largest composite-built yacht ever crafted by the shipyard, and the largest in the historic semi-displacement line of the brand.

The SD132 continues the legacy of the previous models in the SD line (SD92, SD126, SD112, SD96, SD118, and SD90) while refining and innovating its key features.

“We are thrilled with the launch of the SD132 project, which embodies the perfect combination of significant size, innovative design, and timeless elegance, in true Sanlorenzo style,” says Tommaso Vincenzi, President of Sanlorenzo’s Yacht Business Unit.

“The exceptional market response has been confirmed by the five contracts already signed before the launch, demonstrating the great success and appreciation this yacht is receiving among owners. Every detail of the SD132 reflects the dedication and passion of our team, which has once again sought to challenge traditional limits related to onboard space and volume, achieving a remarkable result.”

Extraordinary volumes and a direct connection with the marine environment

With the SD132, Sanlorenzo has combined significant dimensions with unprecedented volumes – its 420 gross tons make the yacht unique among models of this size, in part owing to the innovative use of space, which has become a distinctive feature.

One of the project’s strengths is the innovative configuration of the expansive beach area, with its seamless connection to the aft cockpit. Once rotated and opened, the lateral terraces offer guests large walkable surfaces of 70-square-metres and free the cockpit from any visual obstacles, transforming it into an open terrace that allows guests to fully connect with the sea.

In addition to the expansive volumes and spaces, and the revolutionary configuration of the beach area, the SD132 also stands out for its vast 85-square-metre space on the fly deck. The forward living area features a crystal-clear mini pool equipped with a sunbathing system, connecting the forward section to the main deck.

The side garage with transverse launching capability, which can accommodate a tender up to 6.25-metres long and is typically found on larger yachts, offers extensive possibilities for custom layouts. This space, located in the forward area, is complemented by an additional hangar designed to house toys or a rescue boat.

An asymmetric design for unprecedented interior spaces

The exterior design, created by Zuccon International Project, is characterised by a sense of absolute balance and gives a unique visual harmony to the application of the asymmetry concept, of which Sanlorenzo is the creator and pioneer in the yachting world. On this yacht, the main deck walkway is positioned on the left side, while the upper deck walkway is on the right, balancing the weight distribution and optimising the volumes.

Thanks to this configuration, onboard spaces are optimised, seamlessly connecting the decks and facilitating vertical circulation, thus maximising the use of interior volumes. The yacht features four guest cabins on the lower deck, which also includes the crew area with a dinette and laundry facilities. A spacious owner’s suite, measuring 55-square-metres, is located in the forward section of the main deck. The main deck also features a large salon with expansive windows, complemented by a second salon located on the upper deck.

The collaboration between Sanlorenzo and Zuccon International Project, which also extends to the interior design of the first SD132 unit, has resulted in a project that celebrates uniqueness and places the owner at the centre, delivering a yacht that reflects and enhances their needs in every detail.

“The interiors reflect the stylistic journey undertaken by the Studio, aimed at enhancing a sense of naturalness and establishing a sensory connection between the owner and the yacht,” comments Bernardo Zuccon – Zuccon International Project.

“A material mood board and earth-inspired colours create authentic, balanced, and welcoming environments. The exteriors also demonstrate a commitment to research: innovative layout solutions and technological flexibility seamlessly integrate the yacht with the surrounding nature, emphasising the liveability of the spaces.”

The first unit of the SD132 offers spaces and a stylistic language inspired by the colours of the earth and nature itself, aiming to create a more authentic onboard experience: the interiors are defined by a focus on materiality, featuring soft tones and textures that emphasise sensory engagement for a tactile experience. Every interior space adheres to this philosophy, from the stone-like cement finish to the bathroom furnishings and the owner’s suite, where a combination of dark and light woods was chosen. The same approach was applied to fabric selection, enhancing the spaces with a warm and distinctive feel, while also ensuring sustainability in the choice of materials.

The result is an exceptionally sturdy yacht, in line with Sanlorenzo’s tradition of semi-displacement vessels, designed to ensure extended range capabilities for reaching even the most remote destinations. This new yacht, in particular, offers a range of 3,200 miles, making it well-suited for transoceanic navigation.

Sanlorenzo unveils project to build the first green methanol bi-fuel superyacht

Sanlorenzo has unveiled the LIFE MYSTIC (Methanol for Yachting Sustainable energy Transition applied to Internal Combustion engines) project in collaboration with Nanni Industries and Ranieri Tonissi. The rationale of this project is to produce the first green methanol bi-fuel superyacht by 2027.

Coordinated by Sanlorenzo, with an official kick-off of 1 June, the project will last 54 months and involve a total investment of over €4.8 million, 60% of which will be covered by European funds obtained under the ‘Circular Economy and Quality of Life’ funding line of the LIFE programme.

The aim of the LIFE MYSTIC project is to test engines and generators for superyachts powered by a combination of diesel and methanol, and significant results are expected in terms of reduced environmental impact:

– reduction in greenhouse gas emissions: 150 t/y CO2eq

– reduction in fossil primary energy consumption: 700 MWh/y

– reduction in air quality contamination: 630 kg/y

Under the guidance of Sanlorenzo, LIFE MYSTIC plans to house two high speed 4-stroke MAN diesel engines on board a superyacht – in collaboration with Ranieri Tonissi as a development partner – along with two 4-stroke diesel generators – made by Nanni Industries – adapted to operate in bi-fuel green methanol – diesel.

The production of bi-fuel adaptation kits involves a very careful engineering process to ensure efficiency and reliability in the combustion of two different types of fuel in a single engine, having to guarantee a safe switch from diesel-only at any time and making these engines the ideal solution for a transitional market.

The boat’s design will be adapted by Sanlorenzo, which will convert two traditional diesel fuel tanks into additional methanol tanks and will integrate the distribution system with the required lines and equipment, completing the conversion to bi-fuel of the entire boat.

There will be two main challenges in the realisation of this project. The first is the design of the structural methanol tanks with the realisation of the related plant engineering, a solution that will be complex both in terms of integration in the relatively small space of a yacht, and in terms of fuel management, which requires special attention and must meet the stringent safety regulations in force.

The second is the conversion of endothermic engines to bi-fuel, starting from existing engines, which is a particularly challenging innovation that will be done for the first time on a diesel engine of this size.

The decision to use methanol to power bi-fuel engines in order to reduce environmental impact stems from the fact that this fuel is one of the most promising alternatives for the future of maritime transport. It is liquid at ambient temperatures and is already available in more than 100 ports globally. Moreover, when generated from

renewable energy resources, it becomes a zero-emission fuel, as required by the net-zero strategy.

The accessibility of green methanol is a crucial point for the success of the LIFE MYSTIC project: the availability of renewable methanol is therefore required by the project itself to concretely demonstrate that this solution allows significant reductions in CO2 and other pollutants.

The LIFE MYSTIC project represents an important step forward in the sustainability of the yachting sector, and will bring benefits to the entire marine industry, both in terms of technological development and strengthening the alternative fuel supply chain.

LIFE MYSTIC is part of Sanloremzo’s ‘Road to 2030’ plan with which the shipyard aims to be a pioneer in environmental sustainability, making it a strategic lever for business growth. This initiative represents a fundamental step in that journey that recently saw the launch of the 50Steel, the first superyacht in the world to use the Reformer Fuel Cell green methanol system to generate electricity, and which aims to launch the first carbon neutral vessel by 2030.

Linley’s iconic flagship design showroom has been taken over by masters of Italian yacht design, Sanlorenzo, to spread an important message about the shipyard’s commitment to sustainable yachting and demonstrate the brand’s creative, out-of-the-box thinking.

Linley’s reimagined exterior showcases a dramatic blue grass seascape with two emerging whale tales. Inside, the showroom has been transformed to replicate a Sanlorenzo yacht interior, evoking the signature on-water lifestyle.

The pop-up is a celebration of the launch of two progressive new additions to the Sanlorenzo Asymmetrical and Smart Performance lines: the SL86A and SP92, which debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival last month. Both yachts have been designed and built to maximise efficiency to reduce environmental impact, without compromising on the elegance and style synonymous with Sanlorenzo.

“We wanted the high impact aesthetic of our partnership with LINLEY to resonant with our UK clients during Frieze week,” says Nick Hatfield, Sales Manager, Sanlorenzo UK.

“The whale tales symbolises respect for marine biodiversity and the importance of protecting our oceans, while encouraging our customers to push the boundaries of creativity when envisioning their bespoke yacht.”

Sanlorenzo aims is to deliver the first carbon-neutral-powered yacht by 2030, with its next steps focused on further developing fuel cell technology and introducing hybrid propulsion systems.

Sanlorenzo’s installation at Linley’s Belgravia interior design studio is open until Saturday 12th October, 10am – 5pm daily.
